Youth Training Programs

CM has developed peer mediation programs in the New Haven Public Schools since 1990 and has worked in other school systems across the state. These programs teach lifelong conflict and communications skills while building safer, more civil academic environments. CM’s Peer Mediation Program offers mediation and conflict resolution training to school children. We not only train youth in the local schools, but also youth involved in civic and other non-school organizations.

In the fall of 2008, we trained 279 students in 10 schools. One administrator of a school for which training began in the fall reported in March 2009 that they had conducted 38 mediations and their suspension rate was cut in half.  It is clear that when students learn conflict resolution skills and have control over the outcome of a mediation, behavior that disrupts the learning environment is reduced.
